Water is the optimal beverage to consume for hydration, flushing toxins away and supporting healthy organs; however, some individuals seek alternatives when it comes to healthy drinks.
Too much sugar can add empty calories and certain drinks may lead to bloating or digestive discomfort. Below are some ideas for healthier alternatives.
Water
Water is the healthiest drink we can consume as it hydrates our bodies while providing essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium and sodium to support its consumption. Plus it fills you up faster.
People attempting to lose weight should start drinking water as their main beverage since it contains no calories. Other healthy drinks that could help include milk, fruit juice or tea without added sugars.
One hundred percent fruit juice contains high levels of sugar and should only be consumed in moderation; vegetable juice offers potassium, folic acid and vitamin C while whole milk provides protein and calcium. Sports and energy drinks contain small amounts of vitamins and minerals; however they tend to be high in calories so avoiding these drinks could contribute to weight gain. Instead, opt for vegetable-based fresh-pressed juices or create your own custom infused waters using lemon or mint.
Green Tea
Green tea, produced from the Camellia sinensis plant leaves and containing natural compounds called EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate), may help lower cholesterol levels, protect against heart disease, slow the aging process, improve oral health and contribute to weight loss. Drinking up to six cups a day should be safe for most adults – however due to caffeine content it should not be recommended for individuals suffering glaucoma or high blood pressure.
Green tea should also not be consumed by those taking blood coagulant medication or have had seizures as its caffeine content may increase risk or reduce effectiveness of medications used to prevent seizures. It is best to consult your physician if this applies to you; before drinking any green tea.
Mint Tea
Mint tea is an invigorating herbal beverage with numerous health advantages. Unlike coffee, mint tea does not contain caffeine and can help relieve symptoms associated with digestive disorders. Plus it’s low cal and makes an excellent substitute to sugary sodas!
Mint tea’s relaxing aroma may help reduce stress levels and cortisol, thus stimulating metabolism. Furthermore, its regular use may help curb appetite as well as suppress sweet cravings. Furthermore, its menthol component stimulates brain activity to enhance focus.
Homebrewing mint tea can be done easily using either fresh or dried mint leaves – or a combination of the two – with lemon slices adding an extra refreshing note. To create an extra cozy and comforting beverage, cinnamon or nutmeg may add warmth.
Beet Juice
Beet juice and powder contain high concentrations of nitrates, which the body converts into nitric oxide for improved blood flow and reduced blood pressure. Furthermore, this juice also contains water-soluble vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals which promote liver health as well as athletic performance, according to Largeman-Roth. Additionally, its phytochemicals help prevent inflammation while decreasing oxidative stress oxidative stress; and increasing oxygen availability allows athletes to exercise for extended periods before fatigue sets in.
Pietrangelo notes that beet juice may supplement treatment for high blood pressure, but should not replace medications or other treatments altogether. Oxalates found in beet juice could contribute to kidney stones in people predisposed to them, as well as alter urine color and stool output as well as interfere with how medications are processed by livers.
Kefir
Kefir is a fermented milk drink filled with beneficial bacteria and yeast, providing an excellent source of calcium. Studies show it to be effective against digestive ailments like constipation and bloating as well as alleviate allergies or asthma symptoms.
Kefir contains lactic acid bacteria which help break down lactose, an essential sugar present in dairy products, making it easier for those who are lactose intolerant to digest. This also makes kefir more suitable as an everyday beverage option.
Kefir has also been proven to reduce inflammation in the body and enhance memory function, but for those with weak immune systems it should be consumed carefully as too much can lead to digestive symptoms such as gas and bloating.
