Wrinkles are a natural part of growing older, yet they can make your skin appear older than it actually is. Certain treatments are available that can smooth fine lines and creases.
Topical products containing glycolic acid may help temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Creams containing retinol or retinoid may help fade actinic keratosis spots and even out skin pigmentation.
1. Drink plenty of water
Have you heard the advice: drinking plenty of water can reduce fine lines? Our bodies consist of approximately 60% water; so, it stands to reason that sufficient hydration is important for skin health.
Actual studies show that to reduce fine lines and wrinkles effectively requires more than drinking eight glasses of water daily. Moisturizer regularly and using products with anti-ageing ingredients such as retinol or hyaluronic acid is key.
Facial exercises may help tone and tighten muscles that contribute to wrinkles, as well as reduce stress levels and help sleep well, both of which will have an impact on reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation or spending time in nature may also be effective at managing stress effectively.
2. Eat a healthy diet
Eating healthily and eating balanced diet isn’t just great for your overall health; it may also help reduce fine lines. Studies show that those who consume more healthy foods (like whole grains, veggies and fruit) tend to have fewer wrinkles than those who prefer junk food and meat products as primary sources.
Introduce more nutritious foods into your daily meals, like salmon (packed with skin-plumping omega-3 fatty acids) and tomatoes (rich in antioxidants such as lycopene that has been proven to combat sun damage and boost collagen production).
Zinc and selenium consumption is also known to help prevent fine lines and wrinkles, found in foods such as turkey, pumpkin seeds and spinach; or taken through supplements. Speak to your physician to ensure you’re getting enough zinc and selenium in your diet.
4. Moisturize
Moisturizers provide essential protection for skin health, helping prevent dryness and maintain youthful complexions. Choose one with peptides and antioxidants to reduce wrinkles while simultaneously improving tone and texture of your complexion. Some moisturizers come equipped with sun protection as an added layer of defense, giving you two products in one for daily skincare needs and UV protection.
Fine lines and wrinkles appear when collagen in the skin has thinned due to age or sun exposure, and these fine lines can be reduced with various treatments such as microneedling which stimulates collagen production for firmer, younger-looking skin.
Avoid dry skin by using a gentle cleanser and staying hydrated with enough fluids; moisturizing frequently throughout the year (especially in winter when dryness becomes more prevalent), using heavier moisturizers if necessary (this includes winter time use of heavier moisturizers to combat flaking) and always use lukewarm water when showering and bathing – hot water strips the skin of its natural oils).
