Astroglide Liquid, Warming, Glycerin & Paraben Free and Silken Secret were found to promote R5 and X4 HIV-1 virus replication; their formulations contain polyquaternium-15 as an active ingredient. All other tested lubricants were hyperosmolar and did not prevent HIV infection – these findings suggest that over-the-counter personal lubricants may pose a substantial risk for spreading HIV.
