Cleansing
Cleansing is the foundation of any skincare routine and serves to remove dirt, oil, sweat and makeup that might build up on the skin over time. When left on for too long, these elements can combine with bacteria to cause clogged pores and pimples – thus leading to acne breakouts. Furthermore, regular cleansing allows skin care products to penetrate more effectively through pores more effectively; so when choosing a cleanser it is crucial that it does not disrupt or strip away its essential oils from your skin barrier.
Selecting an effective cleanser is essential for all skin types, particularly those prone to acne and those with sensitive skin. An alkaline soap or detergent may strip your natural oils, leaving your skin dry and irritated; but modern formulations featuring micelle molecules have less barrier-damaging pH levels and are much gentler on the skin than old-fashioned soaps; they maintain the lipid bilayer of skin while having less tendency for protein denaturation compared with previous generations’ harsher products. These types of cleansing products make far superior alternatives than those offered by past generations whose harsher products were available; they now make modern day cleansing products much better alternatives than their more harsh counterparts of past generations!
Exfoliation
Exfoliation helps accelerate the natural process of shedding dead skin cells that accumulate over time and contribute to dullness and patchy appearances on your skin. Furthermore, exfoliating allows other skincare products to penetrate more fully onto the surface of your skin for maximum effect.
Physical exfoliation involves using tools such as scrubs, loofahs, pumice stones or face brushes to remove dead skin. If possible and provided your skin isn’t sensitive then try performing physical exfoliation no more than once or twice every week to minimize irritation and dryness.
Chemical exfoliation is an ideal option for oily, sensitive or mature skin types who prefer gentle exfoliation methods. Chemical exfoliation utilizes acids or enzymes to dissolve bonds holding dead skin cells to the surface of their skin – for example glycolic acid or lactic acid are alpha hydroxy acids while beta hydroxy acids such as salicylic acid can act as beta hydroxy acids (BHAs).
Moisturising
Moisturizers are lotions, cream emulsions, ointments and balms designed to keep skin hydrated. Their ingredients may include humectants and occlusives – both are ingredients which attract water molecules from either the environment or (in humid environments) the surface layer of skin, including hyaluronic acid and glycerin as examples of humectants; while occlusives prevent trans-epidermal water loss by sealing outer layers of the skin while simultaneously softening texture; such occlusives include petrolatum shea butter coconut oil olive oil etc.
Many factors can contribute to dry skin, including ageing, genetics and environmental exposure. Moisturising helps restore the function of the skin barrier by replacing lost lipids to relieve dryness and irritation; additionally it may even improve conditions like Atopic Dermatitis that involve improper skin barrier functioning.
For optimal results, moisturize your face after every bath or shower – at least twice per day – using a light, non-greasy moisturizer with aloe vera extract to hydrate and soothe skin, or use something that contains menthol to reduce itching.
Preventing Acne
Cleansers help combat acne by clearing away makeup, dirt and excess oil from pores while unclogging them. Cleansers also support skin health by inhibiting bacteria that causes outbreaks and reducing inflammation.
Avoid overwashing, as this can strip the skin of essential oils and dry it out. Select a cleanser tailored specifically to your skin type and concerns; for sensitive skin opt for something with no sulfates and fragrances while for normal to oily skin a gel cleanser that unclogs pores, removes excess sebum and sweeps away dead cells may be more suitable.
For acne-prone skin, select a pore cleaner containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide that reduces bacteria while unclogging pores and unplugging drains, helping remove dead skin cells and prevent breakouts. For maximum effectiveness, use it twice per day.
