Skin cleansers are often underestimated as essential parts of any skincare regime, providing deep cleansing and hydrating benefits that set the stage for subsequent products to work their magic. Explore how they work and the various varieties available that suit your skin type!

Choose cleansers free from chemicals such as sulfates, phthalates and other potentially dangerous elements to avoid dryness and harm to the skin barrier. These substances could contribute to dryness and break down.

1. Removes dirt and oil

Cleansing can remove oil, sweat, makeup and debris that accumulates throughout the day from skin surface. Cleansing can also break down clogged pores that could potentially lead to breakouts or blackheads on skin surface.

Cleansing is an essential first step to combatting breakouts, as it removes excess oil and dirt to help stop pores from becoming clogged up. Cleansing also creates a clean canvas so any products you add to your regimen will work more effectively with fewer chances of irritating or reacting adversely with the skin.

To effectively combat breakouts, look for a cleanser with acne-fighting ingredients such as salicylic acid or sodium sulfacetamide (or both), which help to reduce inflammation, open clogged pores and kill any bacteria that could potentially lead to infections.

An effective cleanser with a non-stripping formula is key when caring for dry skin. Look for ingredients such as red ginseng or Vitamin B5 to hydrate deeply while you cleanse. For those managing eczema, fragrance-free cleaners containing ceramides may help restore the skin barrier and increase resilience – just remember not to scrub too vigorously; doing so could irritate and further inflame.
